The European Union invests up to €2.6 billion for the development of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an area of strategic importance and a key driver of economic development. Its implementation has been fundamental in solving some of the greatest global challenges, such as the treatment of chronic diseases or the reduction of fatal traffic accidents. As happened with electricity in the past, AI is transforming the world, society and industry, generating impacts that must be carefully addressed.
The European Union's fundamental objective is to remain at the forefront of the technological revolution that AI represents, to guarantee its competitiveness and to be able to position itself as one of the main actors in the international reality, together with China and the United States. Given this situation, in 2018 he presented a communication in which it shows its approach to artificial intelligence and robotics, which aims to boost the EU's industrial and research capacity and put AI at the service of citizens and economies.
Communication is based on three fundamental pillars, where the commitment to technological development in the public and private sectors stands out. To this end, the Commission has increased its annual investments in AI by 70%, within the framework of the research and innovation programme. Horizon 2020. With this budget increase, the investment will reach up to €2.6 billion for the areas of robotics, big data, health, transportation and emerging and future technologies. The investments aim to connect and strengthen AI research centers throughout Europe, support the development of a on-demand AI platform for all users and support the development of applications in key sectors, with examples of projects developed in agriculture, health, transportation or public administration.
To advance its development, the European Commission and the Member States published a coordinated action plan to make the most of the opportunities offered by AI. Following the signing of the action plan, the Artificial Intelligence High Level Expert Group (AI HLEG) presented its AI policy and investment recommendations.
The development of AI is essential for the development of cities and the management they make of their space.
