Meeting with the SEAD to discuss the recommendation on Smart Port

Last Tuesday, November 5, it took place at the headquarters of the Secretary of State for Digital Advancement (SEAD) a working meeting on the interoperability requirements between the smart platforms of port entities and cities "Smart Port Recommendation". The Spanish Network of Smart Cities was represented by its Technical Office and several of the RECI cities with port facilities (Algeciras, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Seville and Valencia) in order to assess the impact that the next directive may have, as well as the opportunities for improvement and optimization that its application would offer.

The recommendation defines a smart port as an innovative port, which makes use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and other means to improve quality, efficiency and competitiveness. During the event, a series of examples related to smart services enabled by interoperation between smart port platforms, cities and city elements were revealed:

  • Services for citizens, with traffic forecasts or availability of tickets for events.
  • Services for the port and commercial operators, especially tourism, port services, taxi forecasting, etc.
  • Services for the city, with cultural offerings, mobility notices, transport connections, etc.
  • Efficiency in port processes, such as energy consumption, water use or pollution.

There was also a presentation of the next standard by representatives of the SEAD and Puertos del Estado, presenting several scenarios and practical cases in which this directive can be useful. Among the examples, recommendations for tourist resources, the need to guarantee interoperability between smart city and port platforms or models of smart tourist destinations were addressed.

Finally, the opportunity that this directive represents for improving cooperation between all the agents involved was highlighted, in addition to the need to delve into its applicability and the measurement of results after its implementation.
